Painting #2-EXCAVATION
The decision was to dig a deep hole along the full length of the full length of the south side of the obstructing rock and with the use of explosives roll the rock into the hole and build the canal across it. They worked several days with shovels, picks and pry bars, and by going in a circular pattern with horses pulling slip scrapers they removed rocks and sand. As the work progressed, the huge rock leaned precariously out over those working at the bottom of the hole.
